Modular tool clamping systems for modern spindle technology: System component specifications
08.04.2022
Product configuration according to modular design principle is the key to success of our complete clamping systems for motor, gear-driven, boring and inline spindles. In doing so, we rely on our wide range of standard products. It includes a large number of different system components that have already been in use for years – whether as a single product or as a clamping unit.
BERG complete clamping systems for tool clamping usually consist of gripper, spring stack including draw tube and connecting piece for medium transfer as well as unclamping unit with rotary union for coolant lubricant. Mechanisms for process monitoring are added based on specific requirements.
During the design of the modular tool clamping systems, these components are precisely matched to each other with all the necessary application-specific adaptations. In this way, our customer receives the perfect clamping system for his machining spindle. Using our field-tested individual components guarantees performance and cost efficiency of the entire system.
Last but not least, the close dialog with our customers' design engineers enables us to develop the 100 % suitable clamping system solution.

Clamping
Using force-amplifying grippers allow us to build particularly compact tool clamping systems. They are also suitable for configuring systems with spring stacks and release cylinders in an identical size for modular spindles.
Media distribution
Various options are available for the transfer of cooling medium and blast air. In the simplest design, cooling medium and blast air are routed centrally to the tool via a through hole. To clean interfaces with face contact, it is possible to guide the air through an off-centred connection piece to the taper while the system is in the tool change position. Alternatively, we use small valve housings, which distribute the cleaning air to the blow-out channels.
Actuating
BERG spring stacks are characterised by excellent clamping force consistency, high balancing quality and long service life. They form the foundation for the durability of the entire system. Our spring stacks allow extremely flexible configuration and are always adapted precisely to customer-specific requirements such as space, clamping force or load cycles.
Monitoring
Monitoring systems permit automatic control of a smooth automatic tool change. They also help to detect malfunctions in the clamping process at an early stage. Checking the stroke position of the gripper is one time-tested method, for instance.
Unclamping
The choice of release unit depends, among other things on the desired actuation type, the available installation space and the required release or ejection force. Available are unclamping units with hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical actuation. In addition to standardised stationary and rotating cylinders, we primarily produce special solutions adapted to the available installation space.
Media supply
Our compact rotary unions ensure secure coolant medium transfer to the rotating spindle. High-quality components and a temperature-optimised design permit high spindle speeds and long service lives.
